Hosting some 70,000 students from about 125 countries – almost a quarter of the city’s population – Utrecht is a real academic melting pot. The lively, cosmopolitan student scene provides plenty of opportunities and experiences to enrich your time here. They range from extracurricular activities related to your course to a whole range of social, cultural and sporting activities. As a place very much geared to young people, Utrecht also offers great shopping, a wide choice of cinemas, theatres and music venues, vibrant bars and fantastic nightlife.
For both exchange and international regular degree students introduction activities will be organized prior to the start of your study programme. You will receive more information a few weeks beforehand. Read more about the introduction period.
With so many international students here, it is no surprise that Utrecht has an active branch of the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). This organization aims to make you feel at home by bringing you into contact with other students, Dutch and international, and learning more about your host city and country. It offers activities throughout the year, including excursions, parties, international cookery evenings, weekends away, sports days and social events. ESN Utrecht also provides practical help and advice about all aspects of life and study in the Netherlands.
To really understand a new country, it is essential to learn something of the language. For a relaxed way of brushing up your Dutch, check out Language Café Utrecht. Meeting weekly in an informal setting, this group works on exchange basis: you help interested local students practise your language in return for a chance to chat with them in theirs.
